Message Boards

Message boards, are online discussion forums. People participating on a message board may develop social bonds and interest groups for any topic with others from around the globe.

Common Terms Used On Message Boards:

Administrator
The administrator (admin) manages the technical details required for running the site. They may promote (and demote) members, manage the rules, create sections and sub-sections, as well as perform any database operations. Administrators often act as moderators as well.

Flame wars
When discussions become over-heated and the discussion degenerates into off-topic, personal attacks against message board posters rather than their opinions, a flame war is started.

Moderator
The moderator (mod) is a user or employee of the message board who can access the posts and threads of all members to make sure discussion complies with the forum rules, and to keep the board free of spam, bots, and other unwelcome actions.

OP
The first post of a thread is called the original post (OP). The person who created that post is known as the original poster (also OP).

Private message
A message sent in private from a member to one or more other members, but unseen by everyone else on the message boards, is a private massage.

Spamming
Spamming is usually the repeated posting of messages that basically serve no purpose other than to annoy or advertise unsolicited items or services.

Sock Puppet
A member who is currently registered under different usernames on the same message board in an attempt to hide their true identity, usually to create fake discussions between the usernames, often to draw attention.

Thread
Message board threads are a collection of posts. A thread is usually described by a title, a summary description of the topic, and an original post.

Troll
A poster who continually and intentionally breaks the message board rules by posting insulting or inflammatory remarks about sensitive topics in order to get a response from members, often starting flame wars, is a troll. Trolls are also known to revive old, irrelevant threads just for the sake of doing so.
